A tiny Baltimore wedding: Lisa + Jay
The Hunt Valley Church // The Oregon Grille // Baltimore wedding photographer

Lisa + Jay have one of the most remarkable proposal stories I’ve ever heard: Lisa thought Jay did not have a passport. (Which was true — until very recently!) She also had no reason to suspect he was not back home in Baltimore when she and her two daughters flew to Aruba for a girls’ trip. So you can imagine Lisa’s surprise when she and her daughters were eating dinner on the beach after a daylong island tour and saw her love emerging from the woods. He dropped to one knee, pulled out a spectacularly sparkly ring and asked her to marry him. Her response: “But you don’t have a passport!” It turns out that he secretly acquired his international travel documents, arranged the oceanside dinner for Lisa and her daughters, answered all the TSA’s anticipated questions about his very short trip to Aruba with no luggage and hopped on a plane, all for the carefully orchestrated proposal. He then almost immediately returned to the airport for his flight back to Baltimore because he didn’t want to impose upon Lisa’s time with her girls. Such is life for these two! They’re incredibly thoughtful with each other. They love adventuring together. And their joy together is palpable. When Lisa returned home and managed to catch her breath after the surprise of a lifetime, she and Jay looked at their calendar. They discovered that their five daughters in their beautiful blended family — including one in the Army who was about to ship out to Korea — would all be in town in just a couple of days and then not again for two whole years. Naturally, they decided to plan a wedding in just a couple of days so that their girls and their own parents could all attend. It was nothing but joy to spend these couple of hours with Lisa + Jay and their immediate families! Here are some favorites from their very beautiful, very tiny Baltimore wedding.

When you get married just 11 days after the proposal, the groom’s mother might not have had a chance to see the sparkly new jewelry before the big day!

Lisa + Jay really wanted to exchange vows and rings in their own church. But it’s quite large, it doesn’t look so “churchy” and they didn’t want their 23 guests to be sitting amid rows and rows of empty seats. So they decided to hold their ceremony in the church’s little prayer room, which *just fit* the required number of seats!

Each of their fathers shared a reading during the ceremony. Here, Lisa’s father works through the emotion of the occasion.

The bride, looking absolutely lovely.

Wedding bands can sometimes become a bit of a struggle in Baltimore humidity!

Married!

Everyone makes funny faces to get the little one to smile! Mission accomplished!

A few efficient family photos before a celebratory dinner!

I love this next photograph so much. Like Lisa + Jay, my fiance Margie and I have a blended family. This image of the newlyweds with their daughters — all mixed up without a “her side” or a “his side” — makes my heart sing.

We found some gorgeous light — on the far end of a parking lot!

After a few minutes for some quick couple portraits in the gardens outside the Oregon Grille, Lisa + Jay joined their families in the restaurant for a toast and a celebratory dinner.

Many, many congratulations, Lisa + Jay! I could not have been more delighted to spend this afternoon with you for your super-secret, tiny Baltimore wedding!
