Katie & Matt were married on one of the rare beautiful October weekends this year. October is a really popular month during which to get married in the Baltimore-Washington area. The leaves are changing colors, the humidity has (usually) faded and it’s generally just gorgeous. This year, however, was different. Of the seven weddings I photographed last month, only two were untouched by rain.
I was so glad that Katie & Matt got lucky with their wedding-day weather. A graduate of the Savannah College of Art & Design, the bride has a very artsy sense of style. We had planned on some quick portraits of her and her new hubby immediately after the ceremony in a field behind their church. If everything kept on schedule, we’d be heading outside into some golden, glowy light. Of course, there was traffic and the ceremony started a wee bit late so that more guests would have a chance to arrive. But with an eye on the horizon and the sinking sun, the priest kicked off the ceremony just in time to accommodate our outdoor photos. Hurrah for that!
Here are some of my favorites from Katie & Matt’s big day:
I love this image of Katie getting ready in front of a big chalkboard that had been decorated for the occasion.
Holding firmly onto her sister while getting laced into her corseted dress, the bride reminded me of Scarlett O’Hara in ‘Gone with the Wind.’
Getting married…
At our very first meeting together, Katie mentioned that she really loved the plans of her floral designer — Black-Eyed Susan Florist — for bouquets and such. So I was sure to get plenty of images for the bride of the lovely jewel-tone creations.
Immediately after their “I do’s,” we dashed outside to catch the last of the golden light from sunset.
When I showed Katie & Matt on the back of my camera how I was silhouetting them against the orangey remnants of sunset, they offered to crouch down a little so their profiles fell more within the colored streaks of the sky. Nothing like doing a few squats in a wedding gown and tuxedo…
I loved the floral decorations on this cake.
This little one was waiting for M&Ms to be delivered to her mouth. So cute…
Katie’s dance with her dad was one of the sweetest I’ve seen. Near the end of their song, he picked her up and just swung her around the dance floor. Lots of people — including Katie’s mom — seemed to get a little choked up at the sight of it.
Congratulations, Katie & Matt. It was a joy to be with you on your wedding day!
