Becca is an elementary school teacher. Chris is a scientist. Neither of them enjoys being photographed and Becca, in fact, said she usually hides from cameras. “We’ve been together six years,” she told me when we first talked by phone about their wedding, “and we probably have five photos of us in that time.” Working with them on their wedding day at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, I was happy to increase that number by a factor of about 150. They exchanged rings and vows on a beautiful spring day. Over the course of seven hours, they were photographed with hot pink flamingos and a curious penguin named Dawn. They were photographed laughing at the commentary of their friend Moses who served as their officiant and offered funny stories about them individually and together as a couple. They were photographed at sunset and enjoying their first dance and getting choked up at her father’s toast and admiring the impressive spread of cookies that Chris’s family painstakingly baked in keeping with a Pittsburgh wedding tradition. (There were seriously 16 different kinds of cookies and each one of the nearly 1,200 treats looked *perfect,* which means those women are either super stellar bakers or someone had a very happy chore of eating the cast offs!) Nonetheless, despite the number of hours this camera-averse couple spent in front of the camera, I was thrilled when Becca e-mailed me a few weeks after the wedding to say that she and Chris had barely noticed me and my assistant Renee after the formal photos were finished. I can’t think of a better compliment on my ninja-like approach to wedding photography! Here are some of my favorites from their big day:
The bride, looking absolutely lovely.
Becca + Chris decided to see each other before their ceremony for some photos around the Zoo. There was quite the breeze as she walked down the hill to see Chris for the first time that day.
After a few quick and efficient portraits with their families and wedding party, it was time to get married.
Married!
Even though I’ve now photographed a bunch of weddings at the Maryland Zoo and have met most of the penguins who attend cocktail hour as animal ambassadors at Zoo weddings, I still can’t help shooting oodles and oodles of photographs of them. They’re just so cute.
A few reception details, including, of course, The Cookie Table.
A trio of toasts.
A first dance.
And lots of fun and frivolity.
Many, many congratulations to Becca + Chris! We could not have had more fun working with you, your friends and your families!
