A Dahlgren Chapel at Georgetown University & Whittemore House wedding: Caroline + Dan

There wasn’t even a long-range forecast available for Caroline + Dan’s wedding day when her mom e-mailed me for umbrella advice. We had more than three weeks to go, but Patty was shopping for rain gear just in case there was inclement weather on the big day. “Do you have any suggestions in terms of what color umbrellas photograph best in the event of rain? Caroline doesn’t want to get boots but has given the go-ahead for umbrellas,” she wrote, adding that the bridesmaids would be wearing dark navy gowns while the groomsmen would don medium gray suits with navy ties and pocket squares. I smiled as I wrote back that they could either try to match the wedding colors or go for a bright pop of color that would coordinate well with the flowers or other wedding accessories. Caroline + Dan’s wedding day dawned gray and rainy and gray and dismal and perpetually overcast and, oh, did I mention gray? All day long, as I photographed Caroline + Dan and their magnificent wedding party with their darling hot pink umbrellas, I thanked my lucky stars for moms like Patty and the fact that I get to work with such wonderful — and wonderfully organized — families for my job. Despite the crummy weather, Caroline + Dan could not have had a more fun day. They exchanged vows and rings in Dahlgren Chapel at Georgetown University, where they met and fell in love. They were married by a priest with whom they are so close that they’ve hung out together at local bars and played shuffleboard together. His affection for them was obvious as he recounted the start of Caroline + Dan’s courtship, which first took root and bloomed as Dan battled serious illness. The fun continued at the Whittemore House, where the couple joined their friends and families for dinner, dancing and an impressive cookie spread in keeping with the Pittsburgh Cookie Table wedding tradition. Here are many of my favorites from Caroline + Dan’s big day:

I love this next image of Caroline’s dad seeing her for the first time on her wedding day. This is the kind of real, authentic emotion that I love to capture for my clients and what makes me love my job so much.

The bride, looking absolutely lovely.

And then we were off to the chapel for the ceremony!

I love love love these couple of photos that my wonderful assistant Renee shot of Caroline + her father, Ken, arriving at the chapel.

Married!

After a few quick family and wedding party photos in the chapel and making good use of the arches and overhangs and dramatic hallways of Georgetown’s campus, we headed outside again with those cute umbrellas for a few rainy portraits.

I love that you can see actual raindrops in these photos. This was not a teeny, tiny little drizzle. It was actual rain. These guys were troopers to get the outdoor photos that the couple wanted on their wedding day!

And then we were off to the Whittemore House.

A few reception details.

A beautiful first dance.

A trio of toasts.

A few quick outdoor portraits with NO umbrellas when it *finally* stopped raining that night.

A pair of parent dances.

A cake cutting.

A tribute to a special aunt whose birthday happened to be the couple’s wedding day.

And lots and lots of fun and frivolity!

Many, many congratulations, Caroline +Dan! We could not have had more fun with you, your families and your friends!

Your beautiful photographs have transported me right back to Caroline and Dan’s incredibly special wedding day with family and friends! Thank you so much.

You were delightful to work with from beginning to end and certainly deserved “combat pay” for your game and professional work in the rain!

Thank you for making a wonderful day even more so.

    Sincerely,

    Patty
